The concept of Internet of Things (IoT) includes a system of interrelated computing devices, machines, products or people which are equipped with unique identifiers and have an ability to transfer data over a network. One of advantages is that the system doesn’t require human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

All items which are equipped with microcomputers and embedded sensors are able to process information and react according to the information received.

An example of  the implementation could be a “smart house” system which monitors environmental parameters. It can regulate the temperature in the room, control air conditioning, open and close windows depending on the weather conditions without human intervention.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in manufacturing. With the help of IIoT, the intersection of people, data and smart machines will have an essential impact on the efficiency, productivity and operations of industries all over the world.

It goes without saying that smart machines excel humans in accurately, consistently capturing, transferring and processing of data. IIoT (also called “Industrial Internet”) includes machine learning and big data technology, machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, harnessing the sensor data and automation technologies.

Data protection and privacy challenges

IoT Security imageThe Article 29 Data Protection Working Party (WP29) was set up under the Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament 24th of October 1995 on the protection of individuals towards the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.

WP29 identifies following questions, related to IoT concerning data protection and privacy:

  • Lack of control and information asymmetry. Wide variety and number of IoT devices result in generation of data flows that can hardly be managed with the traditional tools used to ensure the adequate protection of the data subject’s’ interests and rights
  • Quality of the user’s consent. It may be problematic to obtain consent using standard mechanisms
  • Inferences derived from data and repurposing of original processing.  Each IoT stakeholder must make sure that the data is used for specific purposes and that the user knows those purposes
  • Intrusive identification of behaviour patterns and profiling. Generating knowledge from trivial or even anonymous data will be made easy by the proliferation of sensors and that might enable very detailed and comprehensive life and behaviour patterns
  • Limitations on the possibility of remaining anonymous when using services.
  • Security risks. Some weaknesses may appear in the storage infrastructure, communication links or other inputs of this ecosystem.
